Life in the Soo -  What can you do in The Soo?

 

Sault Ste. Marie, a “Naturally Gifted” city, runs parallel to St. Mary’s River, the connector to Lake Superior and Lake Huron. A popular tourism destination due to its proximity to the United States of America and the changing of the seasons, there’s always something to do in the Sault. With four distinct seasons, students can take part in hiking and biking, but also skiing and snowboarding. With access to Lake Superior and a true Canadian winter, Algoma U students have the opportunity to experience what it really means to be a Canadian! From lounging on a beach, to building a snowman, students can take full advantage of the changing seasons and temperatures by taking part in seasonal activities. Did you know the Sault Ste. Marie is home to Canada’s second largest winter carnival? Bon Soo is a winter extravaganza that happens down the street from the Algoma U campus and features music, great food, sleigh rides and bum slides, and even the popular polar bear swim!

 

Aside from having great natural beauty, the Soo also has great comforts, including the largest shopping mall in Northern Ontario, the Station Mall. The Station Mall is located in the city’s historic downtown (a five-minute bus ride from Algoma U), which is home to numerous quaint boutiques and eateries. The Station Mall also boasts a Galaxy Cineplex that showcases all of the feature films of this day and age! Directly across from the Station Mall is the Essar Centre, the city’s entertainment complex. The Essar Centre holds 5,000 people and hosts the Sault Greyhounds hockey team, and big-name concerts and events, such as KISS. Plus, one of Ontario’s longest boardwalks runs the length of the downtown corridor, giving our students a unique and scenic way to travel throughout the Sault. Another shopping centre, the Cambrian Mall, is located on Great Northern Road, approximately a 10-minute bus ride from campus. Locally owned and big chain restaurants, along with popular coffee shops that offer quiet study spaces, can also be found throughout the city.

 

Most important, Sault Ste. Marie is a safe and comfortable place to live, and has been designated as an International Safe Community by the World Health Organization.
